Start of an epic fantasy series, this is the same type of story as Gene Wolfe's The Knight (but with an easier to understand style): young man wants to be a famous knight, but the author (through the setting's gods) is determined to much his life as painful as possible. I much prefer characters who have free will (ones who aren't repeatedly surprised at their own words and actions), and supernatural elements that follow rules (and therefore part of the setting, not just plot devices). I might have actually finished this if Erikson's The Bonehunters hadn't shown up in the mail.
