A book I've been waiting for is supposed to be published next month, but I've been getting rather worried about it since neither Amazon nor the publisher have a title for it yet. Today I decided to check the author's website, and discovered that the lack of title is a promotional gimmick, not (necessarily) a sign that the author had written himself into a corner and will have to start over from scratch.
I'm happy, though I suspect this is really annoying to a lot of librarians.

Does Mr. Snickett need a promotional gimmick?
It may just be that I don't get it, but I don't understand the purpose of promotional gimmicks in publishing. If the author or the author's works are well known enough, the promotional gimmick seems to be pointless. If the author is an unknown, it would seem that the publisher could better spend its money on flashy book displays or friendly reviewers.
