Kage Baker, The Machine's Child
Tor (2006) ISBN: 0-765-31551-3
Score: 1.5
Seventh Company book, in which we see people making plans for the Silence (plans that obviously will cause it). Mendoza is present but amnesiac (because no one wants to remember what happened to her between the books), and spends the book acting like a giddy trophy wife and agricultural goddess. The science and technology is even less plausible than before (like the nanobots that can hide dormant for centuries and then suddenly turn into an anti-gravity missile).
