It's a whole lot like a romantic subplot.

I'm trying to think of anything I've read recently that has a notably good romance -- oh, I expect you read Sharon Shinn's Summers at Castle Auburn ages ago?

Putting a hold on the Stross... dang, there's a waiting list.

I'm trying to think of anything I've read recently that has a notably good romance

I don't need a good romance (though I'd like to avoid the other extreme such as "Isn't it so Wonderful that we're so totally Obsessed with each other that we don't notice the irony that it's my job to investigate sex related murders?"). I just want a protagonist who is comfortable with and reasonable about their romantic subplot. Okay, I guess I do want a good romance. But it doesn't have to be the primary focus of the book.

I haven't read any Shinn yet; is that a good starting point?

Do the other 5 people reading this have any suggestions?
