Shaun Tan, The Arrival
Levine/Scholastic (2006) ISBN: 0-439-89529-4
Score: 1

A wordless graphic novel about immigration, with lots of whimsy and atmosphere. This is more Art than Entertainment, and very well done art at that (lots and lots of detail). But I'm more interested in stories, and there just wasn't much of one here.

Next Book: Derek Landy, Skulduggery Pleasant

Oh, I disagree! A general fact about graphic vs. textual novels is that description and characterization are in the art rather than in the words (where there are words). LOOK at that "very well done ... lots and lots of detail"! Spend as much time on a page of The Arrival as you would on a page of any sf author whose writing is complex and you respect highly. (I'm thinking of Gene Wolfe, but I love obscure words; choose your own favorite.) That is not "just illustration", it's a great deal of the story.
