Start of the Tales of the Sazi urban fantasy series, in which a mob hit man (recently turned werewolf) finds True Love and a remarkably strong telepathic link with a suicidally depressed lottery winner. It was nice to see a romance novel with a male protagonist (as well as an assassin who actually makes an effort to ensure his targets never get a chance to fight back), but I'm not sure the Sazi (shapeshifter society) makes sense.
